For the longest time I was of the opinion that people in Dallas didn’t know how to drive in inclement weather. This morning I had a revelation. I was mistaken. For the most part I think folks here can handle the rain (we have downpours that would make a monsoon wince and no one seems to mind), they can handle the sun (I mean sun and heat that make the asphalt whither and melt), the daylight is fine and the night is just more of the same. But what really freaks them out is ambiguity. Give them a dusky, gray, drizzly situation and they all just go bonkers. Now Portland, Seattle even London, they thrive on ambiguity in those cities. But here in Dallas, we tend to like it just so…meat and potatoes, church on Sunday, football on Monday night and men who wear boots and drive trucks and women with big hair who wear heels and drive suburbans.
Or, maybe not. Maybe I was just stuck in traffic a little too long and happened to make the mistake of drinking coffee with caffeine this morning.
