pepper pop top

Working in the yard over the weekend, I almost blew out my flip-flop on this Pepper pop-top.

Quote of the Day

Ever since those early days of the water wars human beings have been trying to figure out what makes one thing one thing and another thing another thing. In very general terms, there have always been some people who are more comfortable with Being and some people who are more comfortable with Becoming. The Being people get excited about how identity remains stable, how a chair is always a chair, a table always a table. The Becoming people are fascinated by the gray areas, the things you can’t quite categorize, the fleeting, the indefinite.

I’m Your Man

I went to the Leonard Cohen concert in Dallas yesterday. It was amazing and I was so grateful to be able to experience it. He is such a master of words and images.

What I didn’t see at the concert was a bunch of dancers, multiple costume changes, wardrobe malfunctions, hyper-sexualization, over-the-top pyrotechnics, lip-syncing or blatantly overt forms of marketing.

Instead, what I was able to succumb to was poetry, passion, lyricism, divine instrumentals including several solos by the inimitable, Javier Mas (bandurria, laud, archilaud, 12 string acoustic guitar), authentic vocal harmonies, skipping, enviable virility, prayerful vocal undulations, overt compassion and regal generosity.

Several times I was actually moved to tears, laughter, knowing sighs and unexpected awe, as were those around me.

I hope that his grace, gentility, enthusiasm, poetry and zest will stay with me long after the remembered resonance of the concert flees.

Consider My Self Given

Filed under Creations + Hero + Soul

I heard of a man
who says words so beautifully
that if he only speaks their name
women give themselves to him.

If I am dumb beside your body
while silence blossoms like tumors on our lips,
it is because I hear a man climb stairs and clear his throat outside the door.

Money Matters

I’ve experienced scarce funds in boom times and available funds in lean times.
I prefer the latter.

Cat’s In The Craddle

Filed under Curiosities + Random Mental Dishes

I just got notice that the bank account I opened in the 70’s (in my first decade of life) is now officially closed. For years it has just been a lingering relic that I seldom used, but for completely irrational reasons I had never chosen to close it. Well, over the weekend I decided it was time and cleaned out the few remaining funds and asked the bank to close it.

This may sound weird, but I actually felt a little sad/nostalgic when I got the “official” notice.

Clean living. Clean lines.

Filed under Soul + That's Living

I really enjoyed this article about Jamie Lee Curtis. In particular I found myself resonating with this quote:

“The same way that midcentury modern architecture was in the ’50s, I want to be as a human being. New. Different. Challenging the old. Function over frivolity. Clean living. Clean lines.

If I can challenge old ideas about aging, I will feel more and more invigorated. I want to represent this new way.

Living in a 1951 midcentury modern home myself, I know that Butterfly and I were both drawn to the simple, clean expression the home would afford us. We constantly strive to reduce, simplify and engage with our home and in our lives in a way that expresses these qualities. Our choice in this matter isn’t a question of style or visual impact so much as it is the outward expression of our quest for greater personal freedom and yearning for a quiet, simple joy.

Quote of the Day

As Dr. Derman put it in his book “My Life as a Quant: Reflections on Physics and Finance,” “In physics there may one day be a Theory of Everything; in finance and the social sciences, you’re lucky if there is a useable theory of anything.”
